看到去年世界大賽冠軍紅襪隊在今年上半季慘澹的成績，別說是要衛冕，許多人更認為要進季後賽根本是不可能，但紅襪總管Ben Cherington並不這麼認為，並表示在731交易大限之前的作為將會是關鍵。

「我們會做出我們覺得可以讓球隊再獲得一次機會的決定，我們並未認為球隊目前已經有著失敗的球季。」Ben Cherington說。

紅襪隊上半季戰績43勝52敗，在美聯東區敬陪末座，完全不像一支衛冕軍的樣子，但根據《WEEI's Dennis & Callahan》電台指出，Ben Cherington仍認為紅襪隊在美東還是能比其他球隊好，並超越它們，球團已經開始討論交易的事情，下半球季將有很大機會。
